What is it?
Atrial fibrillation is an irregular and often rapid heart rhythm that increases the risk of stroke, heart failure, and other complications. It occurs when the upper chambers of the heart (atria) beat out of coordination with the lower chambers (ventricles).
Common Symptoms
- Fluttering or racing heartbeat
- Fatigue or reduced ability to exercise
- Shortness of breath
- Dizziness or fainting
Why it Matters
AFib increases the risk of stroke. If untreated, it can also lead to worsening heart failure and reduced quality of life.
How it’s Diagnosed
- Electrocardiogram (EKG)
- Ambulatory heart monitoring (Holter, event, telemetry)
- Echocardiogram
- Blood tests to check thyroid or other causes
Treatment Options at Flow Heart & Vascular
- Medications for rate or rhythm control
- Anticoagulation (blood thinners) to reduce stroke risk
- Catheter ablation for patients with persistent symptoms
- Lifestyle modifications and risk factor management
